Hi everyone Some of the ROC went up to Main Camp last weekend. - TopicsExpress

Hi everyone Some of the ROC went up to Main Camp last weekend. We had some great game viewing, seeing 20 mammal species, including lots of elephant, seven lion and a cheetah, and loads of birds. Most of the activity was along the day1 route – so we will keep hoping the animals are all still there in five weeks time. Many of the roads have been graded so there was lots of sand, but also still plenty of corrugations. We continue to receive registration forms from people who say ‘we haven’t spent much time on our bikes recently but we are very fit’. Please believe us when we say this is not enough; for your own sake and the sake of the others in your group you need to get out there on your bike this weekend and at every other opportunity before PLW13. Please note that we are riding on Friday and Saturday. This is different to previous years (when we rode Saturday & Sunday) and seems to have caused a bit of confusion amongst some of the repeat riders. Also different this year will be our day 2 route. The plan for Saturday is to ride from Main Camp to Guvalala platform and back. This is a slightly longer distance than usual (64km) but the road condition is better. (However ROC reserves the right to adjust the program and / or route at any time if safety and/or other conditions require.) Vaughan Elkington has once again very kindly agreed to let us use his two bike carriers to transport bikes back from Ngweshla to Main Camp. If anyone is in a position to help with towing one of the trailers from Bulawayo to Main Camp and back, or from Main Camp to Ngweshla and back, please let me know. Also if you would like to send your bike up to Main Camp, from Bulawayo, on a trailer, this can be arranged. As usual we are looking for volunteers to be escort drivers. This can be a somewhat tedious duty, trundling along at the speed of the riders, while at the same time remaining constantly alert and on the look out to point out any animals and/or potential problems. Please don’t forget that a key objective of this ride is to raise funds for Wildlife & Environment Zimbabwe projects including their Hwange game water supply programme. We noted on our trip last weekend that most of the natural pans have already dried up and by the end of June pumping will have to begin at the other pans. There is going to be a lot of pressure on the pumped pans and the game water supply unit before we can hope for any relief from the rains. So do try and find some sponsorship – every little bit will make a difference. And don’t forget we have a wonderful trophy and prizes for our Best Supporter – the person who raises the most money. If you plan to ride but have not yet registered, or have only partially registered (submitted reg form or paid entry fee but not both) please complete your registration as soon as possible. Note closing date for entries is 9 July.
