Hi everyone. You should be receiving this as an email from James at some point today. But just FYI: Hi fellow GEC1s Hope you are all (just about) settling in with the work and Birmingham! I am writing to you all because I am aware we need to elect a student representative for our year. The student rep is the person that students go to with concerns and act as the mediator between the staff and students for our course. The appointment of a student representative quickly is particularly important because there are some clear problems regarding some elements of the course. I am aware there are some concerns regarding the current guidance when it comes to anatomy and am extremely keen to improve the current situation. I have been told that once the student representative has something in writing from the whole student body, and it is presented to Remi, implementation is more likely. Therefore, I suggest we nominate a student representative for the year. I am happy to stand and will obviously be suitably enthusiastic at listening to the whole student opinion, and attempting to improve all problems to some extent. However, I am also aware others may be equally interested and think it should be a democratic process. Therefore I suggest that anyone who wants to stand emails me by midnight Sunday (12th), and then on Monday 13th at 10.30 (before student led anatomy) we will have a short meeting in the GEC Yellow room (everyone will have to pile in!) and we can elect a representative. Anyone interesting in standing can briefly explain their motivations and then everyone can vote at the end of the session. I you have any concerns but are not planning on standing, please can you WRITE THESE DOWN, and bring them to this meeting and then the student rep can have some things to do immediately. Please note, from experience, nothing gets down if people just criticize but if they come up with positive feedback it is much more successful. Please consider this when writing any suggestions. Eg “anatomy is a joke” is not going to get anything done, but writing “the student led anatomy sessions need clear, and targeted learning objectives to guide our learning. For example currently writing “Endocrine and exocrine system” is not clear. An example of what we would find helpful would be: ‘learn the name and location of six key endocrine glands. In addition, know the significant blood innervation (which arteries) to each and the cell type responsible for the secretion in each.” I hope you can all see the difference.
