Hi everyone, another moderator introduction here! Im Alison, Step-mommy to two wonderful young ladies and Mommy to William who is 5 years old. William is the one who brought me here to this group, he is g-tube fed due to him having Cerebral Palsy. We managed bottle feeds up until William was 19 months old, but by that point his weight gain was such a struggle that we made the decision to place a g-tube. He had a hard time with placement of the g-tube. Vomiting increased, weight gain was still a struggle no matter what formula we tried and the vomiting caused him to have an oral aversion to taking anything by mouth. Doctors wanted to either do a nissen fundoplication or place a j-tube. Feeling that neither of those were an appropriate option for him, we started our quest of looking for another way to feed him. Thankfully, I found this very group here on Facebook and with the assistance of Beverly, Eric and all of the other dedicated members, we tried William on a blended diet. In the beginning, both his dietitian and physician were skeptical. They couldnt understand why we would want to feed a blended diet. We heard all of the typical arguments, why would you want to do that?, it will clog the tube, it isnt sanitary and he wont be able to get proper nutrition. I took advice from the other group members that I needed to walk into the appointment educated and stand firm on how I wanted to feed my child. So I did exactly that. I gave them sample recipes and printed out all of the research that I could find. His doctor agreed with us giving it a shot and his dietitian started doing research herself. Three years later, Williams whole medical team is very supportive of feeding a blended diet. Unfortunately, we still struggle with some reflux and vomiting, but William is much healthier now that he is being fed a whole foods diet.
