Hi everyone hope alls well for you in your own Loopy world. I thought to share this here which i recently posted as a reply to a fellow loopers enquiry about MIDI Clock sync strategies, its possibilities and the technical challenges when trying to sync up devices from different manufacturers and how to use this effectively in your own creative workflow. Its kinda long but please take it in bite sizes and feel free to raise questions and add your own suggestions along the way. Cheers Everyone. :) OOpah Loopah (MIDI Clock Syncing experimental adventures) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ive tried various midi sync configurations including MIDI Clock syncing all the Eventides with 1 or 2 x Boomerangs+Sidecar and the Beat Buddyand finally with the TC Helicon VoiceLive3. Ive tried with BeatBuddy as Master Clock and Ive also tried with Time Factor as Master Clock and also 2 independent Clock Masters ie BB in to the Rangs and Time Factor into VL3.All with varying and interesting results but not ideal yet for me. The latest ver 1.73 betaware for the VL3 improves the clock sync for the onboard looper which results with a better initial loop creation start and end point and will playback on the closest 1/4 beat of the incoming midi clock which can be tricky but fun too but unfortunately the current betaware still doesnt support start stop commands from Beat Buddy or Boomerang/Sidecar. Do note that the latest betaware for the VL3 has that dreaded audible Glitch noise that happens the moment you go into the first overdub layer. The TC folks have acknowledged this and hopefully they resolve this asap for the next official firmware update. The VL3s looper is strangely enough very cool imho but the current button mappings of the Looper Controls are just not live performance friendly. When BeatBuddy is Master clock feeding into the Rang it works really well. You can mute/pause but not stop Beat Buddy mid performance whilst continuing manipulations on the Rang becos when u kick in BB from the stop status theres always a high chance its out of sync with the Rang. The way to go in this at the moment mid performance is to eventually stop BB and Rang whilst still playing live and then kick start BB followed by the Rang. Hmmm that can work sometimes but i do find that quite limiting in the range of on the feet creative workflow. Until i fine tune the right workflow for me, I like to have the option to choose which master clock which i can already anticipate certain inherent complexities which i need to eliminate. Ive spoken with Gary Hall and hes made some very good suggestions that perhaps i would like to explore the use of a MIDI hub switchbay device which allows me to choose to break the midi clock chain as and when i see the need. Ultimately my experiments with 2 x Rangs + Side Car works but would not have been necessary if the Looperlative LP1 was a more rocksteady device for my purposes. However, as soon as i hear news that LP1 gets resolved which me and many folks have been waiting for in vain, i will definitely get back to it. Till then this is the fun madness im working with. :) https://facebook/liveloopasia https://facebook/groups/livelooping101/ https://facebook/groups/guitargear101/ https://facebook/groups/320823781359953/
