Hi everyone, its been a while since I have posted anything on here because I have been working day and night on framing a new body of work. Long story short, I taught myself to water-gild via blogs and YouTube and it was one of the most labor- intensive projects I have ever under taken. I took a picture of the 4 basic stages of this process. 1. I dont have access to the tools necessary to build my own frames so I purchased frames from a wholesaler and stripped the fake gold off with lacquer thinner. I did that for days! Eventually, I managed to strip all of the frames back down to the wood. 2. Gesso means chalk in Italian and the gesso needed for this kind of gilding is a mixture of rabbit skin glue and, you guessed it, chalk powder. Each frame needed 8-10 coats of gesso. After that, the task of sanding began. The idea was to make every surface of the frame look like ivory. Julie and I sanded all day and most of the night for about a week. TEDIOUS. 3. Next it was 6-8 coats of a mixture of rabbit skin glue and clay. That was a nice easy step because it was thin enough so it didnt need to be sanded. 4. Finally it was time for the gold and paint! I used 12k, 18k, and 24k deepening on the color needed. Thats pretty brief, but you get the idea. Ill be posting pictures of the paintings and the frames I refinished for them starting tomorrow. For now Im gonna kick back and watch a movie with Julie. Good night ;)
