Hi folks - bit of a long post. A little word about advertising events on the group. Events for other astronomical societies - no problem. There is a history of collaboration and support from all the northeast clubs down the years. If you are a private individual organising a paid event in which you and other local businesses benefit - no, you cant do that in this group. Heres why. NASTRO has been around for almost 15 years. In that time weve arranged hundreds of events inschools, hospitals and other local community groups. Weve made astronomy accessible to everyone at no cost. We ask for donations but we dont expect them. Like other clubs weve been able to do what we do because weve got fantastic support from our members (and often their family and friends). Do we really do it for free? The £20 membership fee? That allows us to pay the bills. Insure the observatory, pay for equipment and repairs, heating and other costs. We NEVER charge for observing sessions. You dont need to be a member of the club to enjoy a laser guided tour of the sky or a look through our telescopes. NASTRO is comprised of members from all walks of life including qualified teachers and lecturers who would be capable of turning a profit from astronomical events if they chose. I suspect many of them dont because they share the same ethos (along with many astronomical societies). Namely, that the sky is for everyone - not just those that can afford it. Im not saying people shouldnt try to make a living out of commercial astronomy events. But dont join a group built from the reputation and history of NASTRO ask its members to pay you. Feels a bit disrespectful. Clear skies, Adrian ======================= NASTRO Group Moderator
