Hi folks, Bob again. I was reading an interesting story out of Great Britain about a study showing a growing number of children are losing a desire to “compete” in sports. They dont care about “winning or losing”, they dont want to keep score, they just want to have fun and play the sport and not have a “winner”. This is consistent with the growing trend of minimizing the benefits of competition in childrens sports, keeping score, having a winner and yes, dare I say......having a loser. I do not agree with this mentality that says “every child gets a trophy”, “every child is a winner”, “there are no losers”.....”the important thing is to just have fun”. I say this is unhealthy. I dont like it. I think kids need to learn how to be gracious losers. They need to learn how to bounce back from failure, how to strive for improvement, how to compete in the world, how to give their best effort and how to EARN a prize, rather than feeling “entitled” to a prize for just showing up and having fun. I dont see this “everyone gets a ribbon” mentality as a Biblical model at all and it denies children the opportunity to learn about effort, hard work, trying hard, work ethic, honest competition, and being a gracious winner and/or loser. These are all necessary life lessons that help shape a proper worldview and I think we need to get back to promoting them. However, I am also aware that some Christians may look at this the other way. Maybe you feel this trend is a good thing. You may feel its better and more Biblical for children to learn not to “compete against others” trying to make someone else a “loser” while you are the “winner”. Personally, I dont agree with looking at it that way, but Id like to know what you all think? What are your thoughts on this growing trend of anti-competition that eliminates the concept of “winners and losers”? telegraph.co.uk/education/educationnews/10777936/Children-no-longer-care-about-winning-or-losing-in-sport.html
