Hi folks, Bob again. Tomorrow, the 9-11 Memorial Museum opens to the public and a controversy has developed. The Museum has a Gift Shop. Many of the families are furious, calling it “crass commercialism”. They feel its inappropriate to sell souvenirs, t-shirts and trinkets on the very site where 3000 lives were lost. They feel its like putting a souvenir shop in a graveyard. But, theres another side to the story. Ground Zero is more than a graveyard. Its also a memorial, museum and tourist attraction for all Americans who remember that horrible day. Many Americans want to be able to purchase a momento or reminder of their visit. Its also very common for somber memorials to serve the public with the practical realities of gift shops, book stores, etc. Some places that have either book, gift or souvenir shops are the Holocaust Memorial and Museum, the Pearl Harbor Memorial, the Oklahoma City bombing Memorial and Museum, the Gettysburg Memorial, the Anne Frank House and Museum, Arlington National Cemetery......even the Auschwitz Memorial. So what do you folks think of the 9-11 Memorial Museum having a gift shop in it? Is it wrong and insensitive? Or are the families being unrealistic in that its considered commonplace for other tragedy memorials to have gift, book or souvenir shops? What do you all think? washingtonpost/news/post-nation/wp/2014/05/19/families-infuriated-by-crass-commercialism-of-911-museum-gift-shop/
