Hi folks, Its mid week and were upset today... So the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago is declaring that hearing aids and spectacles would now be free to children.. However, these were always free.. How do we decide what is a necessary service for Persons with Disabilities? Do we just come up with Ideas or do we consult with the groups?? It makes no sense to provide hearing aids to children who are Deaf/ Hard of Hearing if you are not providing special education Teachers with the skill of Sign Language. If there are no teachers with this skill, main- streaming children who are Deaf would be more frustrating than assisting.. Hearing Aids dont hear... They amplify sounds in an environment.. Sign Language is the first language of a person who is Profoundly Deaf. It is his way of communicating. We must always be vigilant, when we lapse, the powers that be will think they can continue to provide minimal lip service and get away with it.. Be vigilant, this is our life...
