Hi friends - If you are uncertain, confused, or disheartened by politics today and dont really know the difference between the political Parties anymore, please check out this short (funny) video MOUSELAND with an introduction by successful Canadian actor Kiefer Sutherland - who is the grandson of the late Tommy Douglas, founder of the new Democratic Party (and voted #1 Favourite Canadian as Canadas Father of Medicare by the people of Canada). The animated video is the Tommy Douglas story of Mouseland - a reminder of WHY Canadians need a Party whose values are based on social justice and financial equity for ALL PEOPLES in order to for a government that has the majority of peoples best interests at heart. In Tommys story the millions of mice living in Mouseland finally come to the realization that nothing is going to change until they have a successive number of governments run by mice instead of just switching back and forth between the other two Parties of fat cats (who of course create laws that favour the best interests of cats - not mice). And by fat cats Tommy Douglas means the Liberals and Tories. Although Im sure that these days, for many of our friends who are from diverse cultures and backgrounds - especially the First Nations - after hundreds of years of abuse and neglect at the hands of white males in government we could all be seen as cats taking advantage of them and their beautiful Mouseland which we now call Canada. But one thing I have learned from being behind the scenes in politics (for almost five years now) is that it does not matter the race or religion or gender of a person - it is the VALUES that they hold that really matter. The people of this world have more in common than most people think - and having lived and traveled across North America as well as many other countries, I have seen this for myself. I also believe we share the same two major problems. The two biggest problems that I see which affects most people are actually two sides of the same coin (and one causes the other): Poverty and Greed. Countries with Social Democratic governments fare much better in this regard - with a consistently higher quality of life and a greater healthy and active longevity. The NDP is Canadas ONLY Social Democratic Party. And our Party mandate addresses the fact that any thinking person should agree that one of our main missions should be the need to eradicate poverty. Thats what brought me to this Party - because I whole-heartedly believe that statement in our mandate. Poverty exists purely because of a broken system which stacks the odds in favor of the few at the expense of everyone else. It is therefore imperative for governments to work towards the eradication of poverty which has no sensible reason to exist in the 21st century in a land as bountiful as Canada. Unfortunately because of this flawed system more and more of our middle class are slipping down and becoming the working poor - many of whom could once live comfortably on one salary per household. But now (no matter how many people live in that household) ONE salary often times just doesnt cut it and two or three jobs are needed just to scrape by. Is this what we call living? I call that simply surviving! Is this the golden future we were all promised as children growing up in Canada?! I think not. Thats why, in my opinion, the system is flawed and changes need to be made to the root problems. Thats what Jack Layton meant when he said The system is broken - and were gonna fix it!. Jack was right. So was Ed Broadbent and and Stephen Lewis. And Alexa McDonough. And Tommy Douglas. What do all of these political leaders have In common?: They are all Social Democrats and therefore members of the New Democratic Party of Canada. And I am proud to follow in their footsteps to fight the good fight for social justice - which includes financial equity - for ALL. The cats have had their day. Time for people to see the bigger picture in the context of history. For the millions of mice of all cultures, genders, and diverse backgrounds who live and slave away each day in Mouseland, there is a dire need for leadership by those who have their best interests at heart - who want to narrow the gap between the rich and poor and pull the middle class up instead of allowing them to slip down further and further. That means we need a Social Democratic government. In my mind in Canada we are very lucky to have a viable choice - the New Democratic Party. Good luck to our compatriots campaigning right now in Ontario for the provincial election there on June 12th. For the first time ever we were able to send a huge contingency of Nova Scotian New Democrats to help with the campaign - which does us proud - as usually it has been the other way around! Friends, please check out this short video of Tommy Douglas telling his brilliant story of Mouseland and pass it on! Then contact your nearest NDP office to sign up and join our Party to fight the good fight. They say The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results. Dont let the fat cats keep winning!
