Hi friends: SummerSongs West will be happening in Cambria May 29th to June 2nd. We have some very talented and well known singer/songwriters coming in for the camp and they are looking for gigs around the trip. Heres some info. about them and the dates they are looking to fill are before and after camp. Especially Wed. May 28th, or Monday night, June 2nd. But they can be flexible about the weekends before and after camp if thats a possibility. Please let me know if you are interested in doing a show with any of the following people and I will put them directly in touch with you: Kate Campbell: kate@katecampbell Campbell has played the prestigious Cambridge Folk Festival (England), Merlefest, Philadelphia Folk Festival, and Port Fairy Folk Festival (Australia), been featured on National Public Radio’s Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Live From Mountain Stage, The Bob Edwards Show, and had her story (and haunting song “When Panthers Roamed In Arkansas”) included in the debut issue of The Oxford American’s ultra-hip Southern Music series. An interview with Kate (along with Mary Chapin-Carpenter, Shawn Colvin, Nanci Griffith and others) also appeared in the fascinating book Solo: Women Singer- Songwriters In Their Own Words. As the daughter of a Baptist preacher from Sledge, Mississippi, Kate’s formative years were spent in the very core of the civil rights movement of the 1960′s, and the indelible experiences of those years have shaped her heart, character and convictions ever since. As a child of the South, her musical tastes were forged in the dampered, smoky fires of soul, R&B, Southern rock, country, and folk music. Kate Campbell’s music continues to inspire and enthuse a growing audience. Ballet Memphis featured songs from each of Campbell’s six CDs as well as a live performance by Kate and band at a ballet entitled South Of Everywhere. Campbell continues to impress audiences across the US and overseas and tours extensively in support of her CDs including tours to the United Kingdom and Ireland. Cliff Eberhardt: Red House recording artist Cliff Eberhardt knew by age seven that he was going to be a singer and songwriter. As a child Cliff taught himself to play guitar, piano, base and drums. In his teens Eberhardt was fortunate enough to live close to the Main Point (one of the best folk clubs on the East Coast), he cut his teeth listening to the likes of James Taylor, Joni Mitchell, Bruce Springsteen, Howlin Wolf, Muddy Waters, Bonnie Raitt, and Mississippi John Hurt - receiving an early and impressive tutorial in acoustic music. At the same time, he was also listening to great pop songwriters like Cole Porter, the Gershwins, and Rodgers and Hart, which explain his penchant for great melodies and clever lyrical twists. A driving force of the Greenwich Village New Folk movement and well known among his peers, Cliff’s songs have been covered by the likes of Richie Havens, Buffy St. Marie, Erasure, Lucy Kaplansky and the folk superstar band Cry, Cry, Cry (Dar Williams, Richard Shindell, Lucy Kaplansky). Contact info: [email protected] Tom Prasada-Rao: tom@tomprasadarao tomprasadarao/ Tom Prasada-Rao is a musicians musician - an unassuming presence on the folk scene since the early nineties. His voice belies his musicianship and his extraordinary songs. From Rishi’s Garden with it’s homage to Ravi Shankar to the groove of Sleeping Beauty , Tom’s music is melodic, ambitious, and reverent. Hes starting to tour again and is currently featured on the nationally syndicated TV show Troubadour Texas. In the fall of 2007 Tom quit the road to produce records, raise two stepdaughters, and walk a rather large Golden Doodle named Thurman twice a day. In addition to producing, he took a job teaching music at White Rock Montessori in Dallas - TPR was formerly the songwriting teacher at The University of Virginia’s Young Writer’s Workshops - where he created the songwriting curriculum and taught for eight years. From headlining major festivals 15 years ago, to the relative obscurity of his recording studio - Tom has continued to mature as an artist. That work has blossomed into an impressive resume of producing credits as well as cuts (his songs covered by other artists). This year (2012) will mark Tom’s first solo release in 10 years - featuring bass guitar legend Chuck Rainey, and piano virtuoso Julie Bonk who was Norah Jones teacher - all masterfully produced by Jagoda. Cyd Smith: cydsmith Singer/songerwriter/guitarist Cyd Smith calls her brand of music progressive folk. With a background in classical guitar, swing jazz, and American folk and pop music, she enjoys exploring the unexpected--lyrically, harmonically, and melodically. Steve Wacker describes her latest album, Wide Open Night, in a rave review in Victory Review: Cyds musical intelligence and awareness shine throughout each of these songs...they are filled with gorgeous melodies, spry rhythms and lush harmonies. She began studying classical guitar in her early teens, then majored in music at Stanford University. While living in the Bay Area, she was introduced to the rich treasury of American folk music, especially bluegrass and vintage country music. From there it was a smooth transition into 20’s, 30s, and 40’s swing music, and she has delved deeply since into the guitarists, vocalists, and songwriters of that era. All these influences feed into her own highly inventive songwriting. She has produced two albums featuring her songs as well as the playing of some of the Northwests finest acoustic musicians. A versatile guitarist and bassist, over the years she has performed with many luminaries of the national acoustic music scene, including Mary Flower, Laurie Lewis, Bob Brozman, Russ Barenberg, and Rebecca Kilgore. She has been a cornerstone of many Northwest bands in a wide range of styles from Americana to Classic Rock. Pretty cool huh? Actually, thats not a question. So get in touch with me asap if you would like to host an evening with any of these fine artists in May. Best wishes, Penny Nichols, dir. SummerSongs, Inc. =
