Hi from Noumea, Another wonderful day at Noumea. We were welcomed this morning by the locals as we berthed at the commercial wharf amidst the many shipping containers. You were not allowed to walk on the pier so they provided shuttle buses to and from the terminal. We had decided to leave the thousands go ashore early as the queue was very long. We sat up in the Crows Nest enjoying our coffee and chatting. The time passed and it was lunch time so off we went to the buffet. We met our Trivia friends there and we just sat and chatted for hours. They come from Adelaide and Jim makes wooden instruments. The time flew and next the rain came over so that put paid to going ashore. It was soon time to leave and the locals came to dance their farewell for us. It was then time for the Aussie barbecue on the open deck so we went to see what was on the menu. I have never seen so many hungry people as they queued up for food. We had to go to Trivia so we didnt stay to eat. The entertainer tonight was Amber Jade, a girl from Sydney who plays, Saxaphone and Clarinet. She also sang and danced and was just marvellous. Nev bought a CD so we can bring her home with us. Noumea was discovered by Captain Cook in 1774. It is very historic and there are many interesting places to visit. The island society is cosmopolitan, but young-a third of the people are under the age of 16. The societys broad ethnic fabric includes more than 15 distinct language groups that are shared among the Kanaks alone. New Caledonians also come from France, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, and Vanuatu. The first European settlers were miners and cattle ranchers. It is a very rich in nickel and is the worlds largest producer. It is also one of the most affluent countries in the world next to Dubai. This is evident by the many large yachts in the harbour. We are at our favourite Isle of Pines tomorrow. The sea is rocking again so it will rock us to sleep.
