Hi guys. I have to weigh against a fixed link Im afraid. I honestly cant understand how we could talk about spending millions and millions of pounds on a fixed link solution when really we should be petitioning for the council to get ferry prices, council tax and business rates DOWN and/or the standards of our current infrastructure UP. I agree totally with those who have concerns with extra traffic. Were talking about a cheaper and simpler connection which brings additional trade to the island. Therefore we are certainly looking at another level of traffic hitting our poor roads... and lets face it - they are a disgrace!!! One heavy snowfall and there are potholes everywhere for months... Getting back on to topic - the ferries (despite the fact that they clog up the respective towns at which they dock... which is really a continued problem with information given out to customers and lack of efficient ferry access road staffing... which neither the council or the ferry companies will take responsibility for I might add) currently act as a convenient control system for traffic hitting the island. Anyone who drives daily between any of the islands major towns through the hours of 8-9am and 5-6pm, those who attempted to get past The Dairymans Daughter on the evening of November 5th, or any of the poor people who live anywhere near a ferry port will tell you, we already have severe, severe, SEVERE!!! problems. Having worked in the call centre for both ferry companies I can tell you that people will always attempt to book and/or travel (even if they are told not to turn up) at the same sort of times. Many people simply feel they have the right to travel when THEY want to. According to visitwightpress 2,322,000 visitors crossed the Solent last year... OK, they didnt all bring cars and Im not saying Id expect that lot to come knocking on our door at the same time... but what if even a daily portion of those people decided that they wanted to get to the island in time for lunch? What if far more of them decide to bring their cars because its quicker, cheaper (and it might not be that much cheaper) and easier now that theres a bridge?... and by the time this link is built (what are we talking here - a decade maybe?)... what if the islands tourism grows at a steady rate up until then and/or we start to attract more people who just want to see the monster bridge which cant possibly fit in with our island setting?... I know Id be stopping at the end for a selfie... and as a last point - which of our super lucky coastal towns gets its sunset photo opportunities destroyed by this glorious feat of modern engineering?... My god it is the stuff of nightmares!!! Our island is beautiful. PLEASE DO NOT TRY TO KILL IT!!!
