The Soviet Union, a powerful communist state which had sent the first man into the space and had enough resources to arrive first to the moon, had always been trying to defeat the USA to win the space race. On July 20 1969, Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins - Apollo 11s crew - were the first human beings who landed onto the lunar surface. Neil Armstrong was the first man who walked in the moon, he said the famous quote: thats one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind. From that moment the USA became the most important country in space exploration. Now lets imagine that the Russian cosmonauts have landed in the moon first. What would have happened? Probably the world would have seen on TV the Russian crew, lead by Yuri Gagarin landing in the moon, he would have said something in russian and become the first man to step onto the lunar surface. If it had happened he probably would have continued his spatial career and wouldnt have died in a plane crash, he would still be among us; and of course the NASA wouldnt have been as important as it is now. We will never know.
