Hi guys, Just thought that we would touch base following the skill share session at Amnesty today. This was an opportunity for volunteers / interns to quiz staff on their personal and professional journey to the role that they currently have. We had Amelia Freelander (media), Andrew Barker (Director support services), Ming Yu (Tactical Campaigns), Michael Hayworth (Crisis Campaigner), Samantha Hagaman (Communications Coordinator) and Verity Appleby (Fundraising) These people have come from a range of backgrounds - Industrial Relations / Unions, Publications, Journalism (ABC,SBS), Miltary, Political activism, Arts and International volunteering. Some of their top tips that they shared were: - Write down the top 5 organisations / jobs that you want - Entry level positions are not always where you end up - Talk to as many people as you possibly can, take them out to coffee, pick their brains - Have diverse experience in a range of organisations: NGOs, Inter-governmental, Corporate sector, government etc. - Law is NOT a pre-requisite. Only one panelist has completed a law degree and that was while working at Amnesty - Working within fundraising allows you to be involved in a range of different areas (shaping campaigns, communications etc.) - two of the panel have had long experience in fundraising - International internships (check out those opportunities offered by your government or intergovernmental organisations - often paid and less visa complications - Be adaptable and take opportunities when they arise - Have a broad set of skills, often in NGOs (due to tight budgets) you will cover a range of responsibilities - Dont worry about the job title, look at the skills it can develop - Dont doubt yourself, dont be scared of failure and apply for those positions you dont think you have a chance of getting because you may surprise yourself. Our next skill share session will be on developing communication / presentation / public speaking skills on 8 September 2-3:30pm.
