Hi guys, The next away trip of the year will be just after the Easter break and well be going to the Lake District for 3 days over a bank holiday weekend. The Lake District is one of the most beautiful places in the England and is by far the most mountainous - think Snowdonia, but with town names you can read. This long weekend provides the perfect excuse to have a break from revision and get away from Southampton! Here are the essentials: When? Leaving – Friday 2nd May (6 PM from the HIGHFIELD INTERCHANGE) Returning – Monday 5th May (late evening) How much? £50 for members £60 for non-members (extra £10 membership which is half price at this stage in the year and will entitle you to get money back on your day trip train tickets). What’s included in the price? • Transportation • Campsite fees • Some great walking with spectacular views guaranteed • A great bank holiday weekend away with your favourite Southampton Hillwalkers Bargain! Food! Unlike other away trips we don’t provide food for the Lakes, it’s a longer trip and we don’t have facilities on a campsite to cater for people! Milk, tea and coffee will be provided at breakfast but that is all. A guideline for how meals will work is as follows: Friday Dinner: Motorway services or packed dinner Saturday Breakfast: Bring breakfast with you, a small number of stoves will be available for tea/coffee Saturday Lunch: Packed, please bring this with you Saturday Evening: FOOD SHOPPING followed by a barbeque or alternative at the campsite (bring money) Sunday Breakfast & Lunch: Bring or buy Satuday evening Sunday Evening: There will be an optional meal at a local Pub, more details to follow Monday Breakfast & Lunch: Bring or buy Saturday evening Monday Dinner: Services or Wetherspoons on return journey as usual How to sign up: The signup will be via our online system - for those of you who are unfamiliar; go to the web form at soton.ac.uk/~walking/awaytrips/ The form will go live 7 AM on Monday morning (the 24th) so don’t forget to set an alarm! How to pay: • Come to the Wednesday drop in meeting (Stag’s head 1pm-2pm) • Leave a cheque in the SUHC pigeon hole (located in the AU office above the Stags, ask at reception if you are unsure how to find it). Please put it in an envelope saying who you are and what it’s for, also don’t forget your student numbers if you need to become a member! Please dont put cash in the pigeon hole • Alternatively pay one of us, or your friendly club treasurer Owen, in person If you havent paid or made arrangements with us by the 31st March, we will reallocate your place. Please note that spaces are allocated on a first come first served basis, but will only be confirmed once you’ve paid. Also if you can no longer come, please let us know so that we can reallocate your place. What to pack: • Tent (if you have one, if not don’t worry!). • Outdoor Sleeping Bag. • Roll Mat (the club has some, but not enough for everyone. Its worth buying a cheap one) • Cutlery + mug. • Food (see above). • Walking boots - if you dont bring these, your choice of walk will be heavily restricted (i.e. youll be staying in the touristy bits or worse still at the campsite. Trainers are no longer sufficient!) • Couple of warm fleecy layers - wind chill is more significant than you think. Lots of thinner layers are better than one thick one. • Hats, gloves, scarves. • Waterproof jacket + trousers. • Decent loose fitting trousers - NOT JEANS! The quicker they dry the better. • Water bottle (minimum 1L) - you will need to drink more fluid than on a day walk! • Wash kit, towel and spare clothes. • Rucksack - Around 20L. • Small torch - always useful. Please keep your main bag as small as possible so that there is also room for you inside the minibus! Slightly more embellished information with a friendly SUHC sheep background can be found in the away trips section of the club website: soton.ac.uk/~walking/awaytrips.php Any problems or queries, please feel free to contact us: James and Katherine [email protected]
