Hi there! I am new here, mom of a newly amputated Tripawd. My George is a 10 year old English setter diagnosed with eccrine carcinoma, an extremely rare cancer (as in, so rare there are only a few sentences about it anywhere in dogs, mostly just saying, We dont know anything about it except that it spreads through lymph nodes.) It is a cancer of the sweat glands. Georges afflicted rear foot had a tumor between his toes that was removed but it really wasnt healing well. The biopsy came back with the cancer diagnosis and we went to an oncologist, who did some more tests and discovered that the cancer had spread to a lymph node in his leg. To try and prevent further spread, as well as stop the discomfort he was experiencing in his foot (which was likely to regrow the tumor), we amputated the leg last Tuesday. He is doing great! BUT he is really wary about jumping up onto the furniture, as if he tries to put his paws up (or Im sure if we would pick his paws up, as if to give him a hug or help him onto the furniture) his remaining back leg just folds under him. If he isnt thinking about it and gets a running start especially, he can make it onto the dogs futon or the couch, but if he hesitates, he cant do it. I would like to do some PT exercises to help him build strength in that leg and help him learn to balance better, but am not sure where to start. Does anyone have any resources for this?
