Hi there, Ive heard some strange opinions in my three and a half decades in financial journalism. But yesterdays, from the Secretary General of the Black Business Council, set a new mark. Despite my repeated incredulity during our CNBC Africa interview, Gregory Mofokeng asserted most passionately the intention of PPC shareholders who wanted change, was racist. He maintains they backed former CEO Ketso Gordhan primarily to swap a predominantly black board of directors with a white one. So Gordhan, a truly authentic struggle veteran, is accused of aligning himself with a bunch of racists. Ditto Bobby Godsell, a universally respected anti-apartheid campaigner. And every other one of Gordhans proposed directorate and the agitated PPC shareholders. Mofokeng may well have been playing politics. His opinions certainly won the hearts of some black staff who were watching. What concerned me even more, though, was his refusal to countenance reality. That the only colour shareholders care about, is green. They couldnt give a fig about race. They care only about returns. But what is obvious to one is anathema to another. On this showing, certain powerful lobbies in South Africa have a long, long way to go. Best Alec Hogg. biznews/video/2014/12/03/ketsos-accused-of-racist-motive-for-wanting-to-change-ppc-board/
