Hi there, im a Gracin from island Vis, Croatia. My branch of the family moved here in the late 15-th century fleeing from Turkish raiders. Im very intrested in the information you found by now, especially because it mostly correlates to the story i got from my grandfather. But to clarify on the Italian origin theory i believe it not to be true. First even tho in the 18-th century most of Dalmatia was under Austrian rule 200 years of venetian rule left a deep trace in the cultural heritage, the fact that latin was used in Dalmatia in church also added to that, so you had many peoples names translated to italian forms, one example was Marko Gracin, who was buried as Marco. Also, a lot of towns kept their italian names witch added to the confusion. The earliest confirmed record of a Gracin i have found was Ivan Gracin who died in 1750-ish, from there its possible to trace the line with a few interuptions to the present time, thank god the Church kept good records :)
