Hickox thinks politics are behind the decision to quarantine her? [William 8 hours ago 4 317 Politics cuts both ways. In the Ebola outbreak in Zaire in 1976, village huts, villages, and an entire region were quarantined within 33 days of the first case. Roadblocks were set up between villages. Early observation determined that the epidemic was following the road system. A city of 50,000 was protected with restrictions of all road, rail, air and river travel in and out. These actions are credited with stopping the epidemic and saving many uninfected villages. Infections were limited to 280. Today, we have politically directed policies that resist travel restriction. The road system from the rural areas to the urban areas in West Africa is deemed one of the main reasons this epidemic has moved so rapidly. Failure to invoke early regional quarantine and travel restrictions will have contributed in part to the deaths of thousands. To date we have 13,000 cases and 5000 dead. If you go to SOS International you will now see references to regional quarantines in the afflicted countries. Sort of like closing the barn door after the horses have left. While the various media have said that Nigeria did not impose travel restrictions on the afflicted region when an infection was imported via airplane from Liberia, this is not really true. Nigeria stopped its two airlines form serving the three infected countries and refused entry to a third African airline. Also. the countries that border the three infected countries have border restrictions and effectively create a overland barrier to Nigeria which is the major air transit hub from Africa to the rest of the world. Travel restrictions and various forms of quarantine work when imposed in conjunction with contact tracing, isolation and behavior modification (modified burial practices). Whether its the power of globalism, the desire to not stigmatize or some form of political correctness, letting these purely political considerations influence the WHO and CDC in there responses will have killed many thousands in my opinion before this is over. ]
