Hidden Springs (Winter) was written for the White family and their idyllic farm retreat, Hidden Springs Retreat & Guest House, near Winfield, Alberta. Taking imagery from the winter months I spent there in 2011, this lullaby is a snapshot of winter days skating on the frozen pond, sledding down the hill, walking through the candle lit snow at night, saluting 11.11.11.11:11 around a brush pile fire, etc., all in the company of an incredibly loving and compassionate family. The man who built this place, Neil White, passed in November 2013 and its left a hole in my heart. I have the few shared moments with him firmly locked into my memory. He had an incredible impact on me, along with the other family members, Barbara, Ailen, Kelsey, Skylar, Jordan, their wives and children. Ive been working at Bo.ttega Kelowna this summer, and it has served as an inspirational retreat for me this year. The people here have welcomed me with open arms and given me ample opportunity to work, rest, and write. There is a familiar, almost nostalgic feeling to this place that begs me to connect with music. I recorded the foundation tracks to my album here in January (including Hidden Springs due out in the spring of 2015), and returning this summer, I have this overwhelming urge to keep working on the songs and write new ones. Late last night, I had the entire space to myself with no guests booked in or events running. I had to seize the opportunity to record some songs. Just iPhone video recordings propped up against my guitar case, but the bare-bones production quality and un-amplified performance bring me back to that original feeling of writing this song, especially in such an expansive room and inviting space. The decay on my voice rings out through the walls and ceilings of the main room at Bo.ttega encouraging me to dig in on the big notes and pause with subtlety on the quiet ones. Much like Hidden Springs, this place also seems to take on the same biblical quote from the song...come all ye weary, heavy burdened here, you will find peace. Thank you to Jesse, Kathleen, Nicole, Chelley, Dani, Krysko, Dustin, Donley, et al, for welcoming me to Bo.ttega, inclusively giving me a small piece of ownership in the success and community of this property, and the freedom to explore my own creativity. Plug in the headphones or turn this one up loud on the stereo to get the full effect of the beautiful room. I hope you enjoy... Hidden Springs (Winter) Light a candle in a mason jar to guide me home Follow footsteps through the snowy ground to know Im not alone Feel the winter wind across your face to resolve your soul The legacy was built to share this space it is not my own A splitting beacon of an old birch tree watches over sheep Get the shovel out to clear this snow flood my heart for me Gather closer as we bow our heads give thanks for the feast This hidden valley from the world we know this sacred retreat Crackling warmth of a brush pile fire encircled in trees Echoing laughter race you down the hill well fall to our knees Winter breath exhaled to work the land so we can breathe Come all ye weary heavy burdened here you will find peace Come all ye weary heavy burdened here you will find peace Music & Lyrics Written by Brent Tyler © 2013 youtu.be/VQwxExqQCIw
