High-Bandwidth DDoS Attacks Becoming More Commonplace, Verisign Finds eweek/security/slideshows/high-bandwidth-ddos-attacks-becoming-more-commonplace-verisign-finds.html Distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks continue to be a growing trend in 2014, according to the third-quarter 2014 Verisign Distributed Denial of Service Trends Report. Some of the trends in the third quarter were continuations of ones observed in Verisigns second-quarter DDoS trends report, in addition to some new variations in attack vectors and targets. The latest report, which covers the period of July 1 to Sept. 30, 2014, found that high-bandwidth attacks of 10G bps and higher grew by 38 percent from the second quarter and now represent 20 percent of all attacks. As was the case during the second quarter, the majority (55 percent) of DDoS attacks targeted media and entertainment companies, up from 43 percent in the second quarter. Also of note is the fact that during the third quarter there was an average of 3.3 separate DDoS attacks per organization. In the second quarter, one of the highlighted DDoS risks was from Network Time Protocol (NTP) reflection amplification attacks. While NTP attacks still occurred in the third quarter, Verisign is now warning of a new reflection attack vector from the Simple Service Directory Protocol (SSDP). In this slide show, eWEEK examines some of the key findings from the third-quarter DDoS trends report.
