High Density Lipoprotein (HDL) and Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL) - TopicsExpress

High Density Lipoprotein (HDL) and Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL) are vehicles made in the liver to carry WATER INSOLUBLE SUBSTANCES, such as fat, cholesterol, phospholipids and fat-soluble vitamins, around in the bloodstream. The LDL carries these substances to the cells and tissues as needed. The HDL returns unwanted lipids back to the liver for recycling. Its unfortunate the NUTRITIONAL DICTOCRATS have labeled these vehicles as forms of cholesterol. They are no more forms of cholesterol than they are forms of fat or fat-soluble vitamins. Whats important is the size of the LDL vehicles. Very small LDL vehicles can get lodged into the artery wall allowing the cholesterol to become oxidized and unhealthy. The larger forms of LDL are of NO CONCERN. When having a blood test for lipoproteins, be sure it includes the particle size of the LDL. Total LDL is not nearly as significant as knowing the number of SMALL LDL VEHICLES. Unfortunately, most doctors only request a blood test for total HDL and LDL while ignoring the test for the dangerous small dense LDL particles. Usually, the patient must request the particle size analysis. The higher the number of HDL particles in the blood the more of these vehicles are available to transport unwanted substances back to the liver for recycling. Therefore, a favorable lipoprotein panel would be high in HDL and low in SMALL dense LDL. Remember, total LDL is not nearly as important to know as is small dense LDL particles. youtube/watch/?v=LUlJE2Rqs0w
