High Point of the Teaching Day: Book talked Gae Polisners THE SUMMER OF LETTING GO. No takers on the invitation after the book talk. But I am not discouraged at all. Ive worked with pre-reading teens for the past ten years. I know that some have internalized messages that the teacher is the man. Readings not cool. And the worst thing you could do for your reputation as a pre-reader is to take a book off the classroom library shelf let alone take one out of the teachers hand. When youve worked with this population for ten years, you put the book on the front desk, turn to do something at the board. You know it will happen without any more interference from you. At lunch time, the book was not on the front desk. It was on the desk of a reader. Works every time.
