High Risk Moderate Risk Low Risk No Risk Issued Thu 8 Jan: 22:00 GMT Valid From Thu 8 Jan : 22:00 GMT(Currently Active) Valid Until Fri 9 Jan : 10:00 GMT (9hrs remaining) Weather Watch for Severe Gales A deepening Atlantic low pressure system (Storm Nathan) is expected to track eastwards over or just to the north of Scotland during Thursday night and early on Friday. This system is expected to bring a spell of heavy rain with it, but the main feature looks set to be gale or severe gale force south-westerly winds developing during Thursday evening, gusting up to 70mph around exposed coasts before these winds veer west/north-westerly during the early hours of Friday, perhaps strengthening further for a time to bring gusts of between 80 and 100mph around northern and western coasts of Scotland before the winds slowly ease from the west during Friday morning. Even across the rest of mainland Scotland and northern parts of Northern Ireland winds are likely to gust to between 70 and 80mph for a time. Winds of this strength will bring a risk of travel disruption and some structural damage with a risk of trees being felled. ---END--- High Risk Moderate Risk Low Risk No Risk Issued Thu 8 Jan: 11:00 GMT Valid From Fri 9 Jan : 15:00 GMT(In 14hrs) Valid Until Sat 10 Jan : 15:00 GMT (38hrs remaining) Weather Watch for Severe Gales / Heavy Rain Another storm system is expected to push in from the Atlantic during the course of Friday (Storm Oscar). Initial concerns are for heavy rain associated with Oscar across Western Scotland during the course of Friday afternoon and into Friday evening. Later in the evening the centre of Oscar crosses to the North of Scotland bringing severe gale force winds with gusts in excess of 90mph across the far North of Scotland and Orkney and Shetland Islands during the early hours of Saturday and into Saturday morning. ** UPDATE - This watch has been updated to remove Southern Scotland and Northern England as watch criteria is now no longer reached. ** ---END--- High Risk Moderate Risk Low Risk No Risk Issued Thu 8 Jan: 11:00 GMT Valid From Sat 10 Jan : 08:00 GMT(In 31hrs) Valid Until Sun 11 Jan : 11:00 GMT (58hrs remaining) Weather Watch for Snow and Ice Following in the wake of Storm Oscar who is expected to track eastwards to the north of Scotland on Friday night, we are expecting a cold north-westerly airflow to affect much of the country during Saturday and into the first part of Sunday. The airmass will be pretty unstable and therefore will bring heavy and frequent showers across many northern and western regions, and as it turns colder during the course of Saturday then these showers will turn increasingly wintry, falling as snow to low levels across parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland, and perhaps across northwest England for a time, bringing hazardous travelling conditions, especially to higher routes. Over high ground some significant accumulations are likely with up to 20cm of snow possible over the Scottish mountains, but even lower ground could see some temporary accumulations of a couple of cm. In addition to this, snow showers over the Scottish mountains will be accompanied by strong winds, leading to blizzard conditions at times. As temperatures fall down close to or just below freezing on Saturday night, then icy surfaces are also likely to be a hazard in these regions. Conditions will improve during Sunday as slightly less cold filters back in from the west. ---END---
