High School Basketball Update: NCHS Boys (13-0) return to action for the first time since their Dec. 20th win over Landry-Walker in the Barbe tournament tomorrow in the I-49 Shootout against Arcadia (13-0) at 7:30. The Chiefs have gotten outstanding performances the last 9 games from juniors Cameron Lard and Austin Guy represent arguably the best front court in the state of Louisiana. The defense on the perimeter by senior Danny Cohen, junior Marquise King and sophomore Brandon Rachal have helped the Chiefs hold opponents to an stunning 41 ppg in the last nine games. The Chiefs remain a decisive #1 in the power rankings according to kenramsey. Tomorrows game is going to be a good one though, a small but EXTREMELY talented Arcadia team is going to come into Prather Coliseum ready to pull off the upset. The question that has been asked....Will the two week lay-off effect the Chiefs?......Not as long as head coach Micah Coleman is running the show. NCHS Girls (11-7) coming off their huge win over 5A top-ranked Walker 46-42 Dec. 29 will face Arcadia (13-3) tomorrow in the I-49 Shootout at 6 p.m. Senior Princess Cohen has been nothing short of spectacular in the scoring department highlighted by her 20 point game against Walker. Junior LaDayja McIntosh has come on strong of late with tenacious defense along with providing a spark in the scoring column to assist Cohen. Freshman Jolie Williams has been a pleasant surprise with her sharp shooting from beyond the arch. But possibly, the X-factor for the the Lady Chiefs has been the defense and rebounding of junior Eladriana Nunu Payton. Everyone was starting to sleep on the Lady Chiefs because of the slow start. But after the impressive showing at the West Monroe Tourney, the reigning District 2-5A Champions have everyones attention now jumping from 39th to 19th in the power rankings in three days. SMH Boys (3-11) - the injury and flu bug has bitten the Tigers of late as they have played the last three games without freshman Bailey Shelton and Wes Carnahan as well as junior Scott Maggio. The Tigers should be at full strength tomorrow in the I-49 shootout when they face Basile (2-7) at 4 p.m. The most intriguing thing about the Tigers is that there is not a senior on this team and they have not played with a full deck for more than two weeks yet this season. Freshman Aaron Howell, with the body frame of a college tightend, has been dominant down low for the Tigers imposing his will when he is on. Juniors Jake Bankston and Ryan Cunningham have been rocks for the Tigers with their leadership and flat out REFUSE TO QUIT attitude. When Maggio and his ability to shoot the 3-ball and create off the dribble, Carnahan and his athleticism and strength down low and Shelton who can simply flat out score the basketball return, this team WILL be a tough out in District 3-1A. SMH Girls (10-6) - The 1A 12th-ranked Lady Tigers made it through a very tough non-district schedule in pretty good shape after wins over 5A St. Amant and Captain Shreve. It seems crystal clear right now that they are the favorites to win their 2nd District Title in three years under head Coach Johnny Cox who has rebuilt the Lady Tigers to a formidable force. It doesnt hurt that the Lady Tigers are also 12 deep. The post dominance of senior Shelby Bishop, the tough as nails hard nosed play of junior Mazie Dubois, the Razor Sharp shooting of freshman Makenzie Methvin, the added depth and ball handling skills of Seniors Madi Ackel, sophomore Addison Shelton and freshman Sarah Gilmore, the shot creating ability of sophomore Saige Doty, the consistent help off the bench with rebounding from sophomores Mary Hannah Hendrix and Hannah Aviles and junior Cheyenne Doty. Goodluck District 3-1A, the Lady Tigers have the personnel, the coaching and the will to win. The Lady Tigers return to action Monday, Jan. 5 at Grace Christian. (Lakeview Boys and Girls Update to come shortly...post was getting too long lol) Lakeview Boys (11-5) -
