High-acid beverages can cause permanent tooth damage Drinking soft drinks, fruit juice and sports drinks high in acidity can cause permanent damage to the tooth enamel within the initial 30 seconds of contact, according to a study in the Journal of Dentistry. Highly acidic beverages combined with undiagnosed regurgitation or reflux and grinding of teeth at night creates a triple threat to young peoples teeth which can cause long-term damage, study author Dr. Sarbin Ranjitkar said.
