High school senior Brianna Turner named 2013-14 Gatorade National Girls Basketball Player of the Year Share This Article: In its 29th year of honoring the nation’s best high school athletes, the Gatorade Company, in collaboration with USA Today High School Sports, named Brianna Turner its Gatorade National Girls Basketball Player of the Year. On March 20, Women’s National Basketball Association champion Maya Moore traveled to Manvel High School in Manvel, Texas to surprise Turner with the news during class. The 6-foot-3 senior wing led the Manvel Mavericks to a 38-2 record and the Class 5A state championship this past season. A McDonald’s High School All-American Game selection and a WBCA All-American, Turner averaged 20.8 points, 11.5 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 3.9 blocks and 3.7 steals in just 23 minutes per game. The award recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field. Turner maintains a GPA of 3.71 and has signed a National Letter of Intent to play basketball on scholarship at the University of Notre Dame this fall. Turner is now a finalist for the Gatorade High School Athlete of the Year award, to be presented to one male and one female winner out of 12 collective nominees at a special ceremony prior to the ESPY Awards in July.
