High surf and small craft advisories for Big Island The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a High Surf Advisory for East facing shores of the Big Island, Maui, Molokai and Oahu until 6 a.m. Monday (Aug 11). Surf is forecast to be in the range of six to 10 feet along North and East shores of the Big Island due to swells from Hurricane Julio. These swells will build on Saturday and may increase to warning levels on Sunday. Coastal areas can expect strong breaking waves, shore breaks and strong longshore and rip currents making swimming difficult and dangerous. Beachgoers, swimmers and surfers should heed the advice given by ocean safety officials and be careful. Know your limits and when in doubt, don’t go out. Boaters should expect recreational surfers and bodyboarders using harbor channels to access surfing areas. A Small Craft Advisory is in effect until 6 a.m. Saturday for Oahu Windward and Leeward waters, Kaiwi Channel, Maui Windward and Leeward waters, Maalaea Bay, Pailolo and Alenuihaha Channels, Big Island Windward, Leeward and Southeast waters.
