Higher – Swifter – Stronger (Olympic motto) These are the Olympic ideals, which began way back in Greece in 776 B.C. Due to wars and internal strife, the contests faded away. They were revived in 1896 at Athens. And have continued, except the two World Wars. The preparations for these games too are expensive and highly technical. The training in preparation for the items is gruelling and demanding. It is strenuous, yet captivating. There are so many disciplines and such a big number taking part – almost 10,000; and about 200 nations. It is one programme that brings the nations together, in healthy but patriotic rivalry. They are incredible feats of physical power and endurance. And there is always the challenge to break the existing record. The Olympic games have produced legends. Leon Stukelz, at the age of 97 was the oldest Olympian. He took part in the Roman rings, a demanding competition and still practises! He intends being there for the 2000 A.D. Olympics at the age of 101 – a centurion! That’s the spirit – never say die. Nearer home we have N. Pillai, who 60 years ago won the gold medal for Hockey at Berlin, 1936, in the presence of Hitler. Our motto Greater – stronger - harder Thoughts 1. Let not age and difficulties stop you from what you want to be. 2. If I should lose, let me stand by the road-side and cheer as the winners go by. 3. Life is a challenge. Winners are those who take up the daily challenges. Prayer: Give me Lord the spirit of endeavour and challenge in meeting the demands of life. Let me face each day with courage, going forward and doing better each time. Let nothing stop me from being good and courageous each day, starting from right here in Phesama.
