Highlights from today’s FAB Music Calendar for June 14th - TopicsExpress

Highlights from today’s FAB Music Calendar for June 14th include… June 14, 1975 – While Elton John’s Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy continued its run as the #1 album on the chart, the Doobie Brothers entered the top ten with their fifth album. Stampede was the last Doobies record with singer/guitarist Tom Johnston before Michael McDonald took over his role as front man in 1976. McDonald would take the band’s sound in a more blue eyed soul inspired direction. Though by the time of the release of Stampede the group was already diversifying its sound…Weaving in elements of country rock, funk, soul and folk music into the recording sessions that led to the completion of Stampede. A great example was the first single – Take Me in Your Arms was a tune Tom Johnston had been a fan of since first hearing it when the Eddie Holland song was a hit for Kim Weston for Motown Records in 1965. Johnston had lobbied for the chance to record it for several years before the Doobies finally decided to give it a shot. According to members of the band, their first attempt at recording Take Me in Your Arms sounded like the Grateful Dead had cut a Four Tops record…Eventually they were able to capture the spirit of Detroit soul blended with a nice helping of Southern California rock. The result was a Top Twenty hit, and one of the finest vocal performances of Tom Johnston’s tenure in the Doobie Brothers. Join JD again Monday at 12:20 for another edition of the FAB Music Calendar.
