Highlights from today’s FAB Music Calendar for June 20th include… June 20, 1973 – Neil Diamond was among the special guests appearing on the 20th Anniversary of American Bandstand. Others joining Dick Clark for the broadcast included Little Richard, Cheech and Chong, and Paul Revere and the Raiders…Diamond made his very first appearance on the show in 1966. He was a twenty five year old just beginning his recording career after a very successful gig as a professional songwriter in New York City…Diamond penned countless hits recorded by other artists – Among them the Monkees. Neil wrote I’m a Believer, a song he actually recorded before Davy Jones and Company and was a #1 song for the Made for TV Band. I’m a Believer was voted the Popular Music Song of the Year for 1966 and became one of the few records in history to sell more than ten million copies. Neil Diamond was on the verge of becoming one of the most popular recording artists in history. He’d just signed a record deal and performed two songs on the September 17th, 1966 episode of American Bandstand…Cherry Cherry and Solitary Man…While Cherry Cherry reached the Top Ten on Billboard Solitary Man topped out at #55…But it’s gone on to be one of his signature songs. When it was re-released in the summer of 1970 Solitary Man climbed to #21. An artist who appeared to be shy in his interview with Dick Clark on that early TV appearance ended up as one of Popular Music’s most dynamic live acts, and has sold more than 125 million records worldwide.
