Highlights from today’s FAB Music Calendar for June 6th include… June 6, 1971 – Gladys Knight and the Pips were part of television history as the featured musical guests on what was the final broadcast of The Ed Sullivan Show. The program was a staple on North American TV for twenty three years spanning 1,059 episodes – Many of them introduced some of music’s biggest acts to the Rock and Roll Generation including Elvis, who first appeared on the program in 1956…Eight years later the Beatles performed on three consecutive Sunday nights, the first was on February 9th, 1964 when the broadcast drew a record 73 million viewers. Many more made The Ed Sullivan Show a springboard for fame including the Beach Boys, Rolling Stones, Supremes, Jackson 5 and Janis Joplin just to name a few. Other notables to make numerous appearances on Mr. Sullivan’s show included Jim Henson and his Muppets who hit the stage 25 times…The all time record though is held by the Canadian comedy duo of Wayne and Shuster who appeared 58 times. The final airing of The Ed Sullivan Show wasn’t live, but actually a re-broadcast of an episode that had originally aired on February 7th of 1971. No official farewell show was scheduled to mark the occasion because CBS never gave a notification of the shows cancellation. Along with Gladys Knight and the Pips, other guests on the evening of Sunday, June 6th, 1971 were Sid Caesar and Carol Channing.
