Highlights of Rev. Tevita Nawadra Banivanua’s Sermon at the Induction Service of the Secretaries for Methodist Men’s Fellowship and Evangelism and presentation of Divisional Superintendent’s Stoles of Office. Reading: Exodus 3:1-14 (The Call of Moses) and Matthew 17:1-8 (The Transfiguration of Jesus) • Our Vulnerability – we are not helpless – but vulnerable. God does not forget those that are suffering and oppressed. • Fifty years is what we are celebrating this year. We were, as a Church, vulnerable to the temptations of society and the world. • The world is filled with lawlessness, murderers etc. We have political activists who think that they can right the wrongs of society. • The Biblical story is filled with the stories great people putting their confidence and trust, not in the hands of politicial activists but in God Almighty. • Of course there were times in our journey when we would “whistle in the night” to keep morale up. • We want to tell God: “God, we know that you are in charge, but can you make it more obvious!!” • God loves us through our fragility and vulnerability. • God loves you as if you are the only person on earth. • We are not beyond God’s love. • As humans we have the capacity to do great evil. God also knows that we have the capacity to do good. • God believes in us, fragile and vulnerable humans, to work with Him to bring peace and healing to His world. • Let us remember the words of St. Augustine – “God has no legs or hands but ours” • God believes in us and relies on us to make this world liveable.
