Highly recommended, especially for Warhol groupies. Or, at least, anyone who finds Warholesque multi-level marketing, where-does-BS-stop-and-Art-start social studies interesting. Movies about Margaret Keane, who created the Big Eyes paintings. I grew up around the bad knock-offs -- the fakes that showed up at Sunset gifts or on diner walls. (There are pop tributes that arent cynical sneers, but they came along later. hifructose/tag/margaret-keane/) I suspect this is the first time Ive ever seen the real thing. Especially, when seeing the body of work in context with her other works, and within history, the real thing becomes far more powerful. Whats going on here is some variation of pop art, but its absolutely not kitsch. Within history, these works appeared at a time when much of the post-WWII world was starving, when groups like UNICEF or Feed the Children were newly born, and when the Cold War weary west badly needed uncompromised, uncomplicated feelings. Scattered throughout the film, along with the visual (and dialog) allusions to Warhol are glimpses of the Big Eye kids in paintings that are searingly intimate and surprising. (Wait a second. This isnt stupid, and theres more going on here than mere sentiment...) And, of course, Amy Adams rules. Again. She plays creative women better than anybody out there.
