Highs in the metro area hit the upper 50s to low 60s this afternoon. The average high for this time of year is only in the low 40s, so we are way above normal for the early to middle part of December. The jet stream continues to blow from west to east across the nation. These westerly winds aloft carry some moisture in from the West Coast, but by the time that moisture reaches the Denver area, it is mostly up at about 20,000 feet. By the end of the week, a storm system will ride that Jet Stream flow in from the Pacific and bring us a chance for snow late Saturday through early Monday. It is still too early to know if the storm system will bring significant snow to Colorado this weekend. The strength of the storm will be dependent on the speed of the system as it moves across the central Rockies. If the storm moves quickly, the mountains will get moderate snow, but only light snow will fall on the plains. If the storm system slows down as it swirls across the region, it will tap more moisture from the Gulf of Mexico and could end up being a significant snow maker for the mountains and the eastern plains. A slow moving low pressure system over the southeast corner of Colorado would bring a strong up-slope wind into the Denver area on Sunday. The most recent trends are showing the storm may indeed take the slower track, meaning 6-12 inches of snow for the mountains. Denver and the eastern plains could see 3-6 inches of snow Sunday through early Monday! There is still time for this to change, so we will keep watching in the Storm Station Weather Center!
