Hijrah to the land of Islam -------------------------------------------- Shaykh Mohammed Bin Shaykh Abdul-Lateef Bin Shaykh Abdur-Rahmaan Bin Shaykh Hassan Bin Shaykh Al-Islaam Mohammed Bin Adbul-Wahaab was asked regarding Hijrah - may Allah have mercy upon them all and bless them to dwell in Jennatul-Firdaws His answer: Hijrah is from the obligations of the religion, and from the most virtuous of righteous actions, and is a means of protecting the religion of the slave (of Allah), and safeguarding his Eemaan, and it is of types: Hajr (abandoning) from the forbiden things that Allah had prohibited in His book and the messenger of Allah - may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family- had prohibited upon all of those who are oblidged to follow the religion, and he infomred that whoever abandons it, then he has indeed abandoned that which Allah made forbiden upon him. And he also informed - may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family- within that which is authentically narrated from him: The Muhaajir is he who abandons that which Allah prohibited. And this is an affair that is unrestricted, it comprises all of the forbiden things, those of statement and those of action The second type: Hijrah from every country where the practices of Shrik are manifest and apparent, as are the signs of disbelief, and forbiden things are peformed openly, the resident in these countries is not able to profess his religion, neither is he able to openly profess his disasociation from the Mushrikeen, (or profess) his emnity towards them, even though he believes they are upon disbelief, (and believes) that which they are upon is false, however he sits amidst them out of greed for money and dwelling, for this man is sinful and embarking upon that which is forbiden, and is included under the threat He, The Most High said: Verily! As for those whom the angels take (in death) while they are wronging themselves (as they stayed among the disbelievers even though emigration was obligatory for them), they (angels) say (to them): In what (condition) were you? They reply: We were weak and oppressed on earth. They (angels) say: Was not the earth of Allâh spacious enough for you to emigrate therein? Such men will find their abode in Hell - What an evil destination! Except the weak ones among men, women and children who cannot devise a plan, nor are they able to direct their way For these there is hope that Allâh will forgive them, and Allâh is Ever Oft Pardoning, Oft-Forgiving An-Nisaa 97-99 For Allah did not give any excuse except in the case of the weak ones who are not capable on freeing or distancing themselves from the hands of the Mushrikeen, and even if they were able to do so, then they do not know how to traverse that path and its guidence, and other than that from the various excuses And he said - may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family- He who mixes with a Mushrik or lives with him, then he is like him. It is not said that by merely mixing and living (with them) then he is a Kaafir (disbeliever), rather the intent that he who is unable to leave from amidst the Mushrikeen, and they force him to go out with them (on expeditions), then his ruling regarding if he is killed is the same as their ruling, and his money is permissible to be taken, not due to disbelief, and if he goes out with them willingly and out of choice to fight against the Muslims, or he aids them with his body and his wealth, then there is no doubt concerning that his ruling regarding disbelief is the same as their ruling And from the Hajr (abandonmnet) that is also obligatory: Hijrah from amidst the Arabs who openly manifest disbelief and Shirk, and indulge in some of the forbiden acts, and he (the Muslim) is incapable of manifesting his religion and is unable to dispute and rebuke them. For then his Hijrah is a religious duty if he has the ability to do so, and if he abandoned it whilst he is capable and has ability to do it, then the ruling of this person is the same as the ruling of the person who (resides) within the lands of the Mushrikeen whos mention has preceded. For these people are treated with hostility and are hated (for the sake of Allah) due to what they have with them from disobedience, and they are loved (for the sake of Allah) and aided due to what they have with them from Islaam. The Hijr (abandonment) of these people and of he whos mention has preceded, if it has within it a superior benefit (i.e. more superior than the harm) and it will prevent others like them (from remaining like this), and it will not result in harm then it is legitimate and allowed (to abandon him) according to the Islamic legislation. Also the one who travels to them is embarking in something forbiden, and he is abandoned according to the level of his sins Our scholars say: He who is resident amidst the Mushrikeen and also the one who traveled to them for trade are taking part in the prohibition, (however) they differ in their punishment. For the punishment of the resident is more greater than the punishment of the traveler, and the Hajr (abandonment) of the resident is more ruder and impolite than the Hajr of the traveler. They are treated in regards to their Hajr (abandonment), their being treated with hostility and their support is all dependant upon what is required by the legislative interest As for the recommended Hijrah: then it is Hijrah from the lands of disbelief to the lands of Islaam, if he has the ability to manifest his religion and himself and his religion is safe from the Fitnah. This is the recommended Hijrah. Likewsie he who dwells amongst some of the bedouins who adhere to the legislative requirements of Al-Islaam, who stay away from that which Allah made forbiden, from the shedding of blood, pillaging money and other than that, there is not found amongst them he who openly sins; For Hijrah from them in this circumstance is recommended, there lies within it great virtue and a grand reward, so he can learn the goodness (knowledge) and establish the congregation and other than that from benefits which are recognised by he who Allah has put light in his heart, and has provided for him insight Then it is to be known: It is obligatory to aid and love the Mumin (believer), due to what he has from Eemaan, and he is hated and treated with enmity according to what he has with him from disobedience. Making Hajr (adandonment) of him is allowed and is legitimate according to the Islamic legislation if there is a benefit within it, and prevention and suppression, and if not then he is dealt with gentleness and not with estrangement, and is incited towards good things with softness, gentlesness and subtleness, becasue the Islamic legislation is built upon the aquisition of benefits, and prevention of harms, and Allah is the helper of guidence Shaykh Sad Bin Hamad Bin Ateeq said - may Allah have mercy upon him-: As for moving from the lands of Al-Islaam to the lands of the grave worshippers, or taking sides with a group of Mushrikeen and the absence of caring about that, then this is from the greatest afflictions and calamities which alot of people fall into and are slack in regards to, and deem them little, and the affair of (these afflicitons) are insignificant amongst many from the people, those people whos insight into Al-Islaam has become very weak, and their share of understanding what Allah sent our prophet Mohammed with - may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family- and what the companions were upon, and those who followed them from the distinguished Imaams has become small And the issue has not ended with the people, even after the prohibition from that, and speech regarding its dispraise, and the censure of those that do this act that is reprehensible according to many, and they have started to not see any problem with it, and they label those who prohibit from it and rebuke those who do it as being extreme in the religion, and being harsh upon the Muslimeen For in the noble Quraan and in the prophetic Sunnah there is that which indicates towards the prohibition of that for he who has life in his heart, and the speech of the scholars guides towards that (i.e. prohibition). For verily they make clear the prohibition for the Muslim who is not able to manifest his religion to reside amidst the Mushrikeen, He, The Most High said: وَلاَ تَرْكَنُواْ إِلَى الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُواْ And incline not toward those who do wrong Hud 113 And He said: You see many of them taking the disbelievers as their Auliyâ (protectors and helpers). Evil indeed is that which their ownselves have sent forward before them, for that (reason) Allâhs Wrath fell upon them and in torment they will abide. And had they believed in Allâh, and in the Prophet (Muhammad) and in what has been revealed to him, never would they have taken them (the disbelievers) as Auliyâ (protectors and helpers), but many of them are the Fâsiqûn (rebellious, disobedient to Allâh). Al-Maaidah 80-81 And He The Most High said: Verily! Except the weak ones among men, women and children who cannot devise a plan, nor are they able to direct their way For these there is hope that Allâh will forgive them, and Allâh is Ever Oft Pardoning, Oft-Forgiving An-Nisaa 97-99 Ibn Katheer said regarding the speech upon these verses: Generaly regarding those who reside amidst the Mushrikeen, he is capable to make Hijrah, and he is not able to establish his religion, and he is engaging upon something forbiden with agreement (of the scholars), and the proof is this verse, and the verses regarding this meaning are many in number, he who reads the Quraan and ponders into it knows that And within the Ahadeeth that are transmited from the prophet - may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family- is that which indicates towards the very same thing that is indicated towards in the Quraan, like the statement of the prophet- may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family- He who mixes with a Mushrik or lives with him, then he is like him, and his statement- may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family- Do not benefit from the light of the Mushrikeen, and the Hadeeth of Bahz Bin Hakeem that you flee from mountain to mountain with your religion. Ibn Katheer said its meaning is: Do not live in close proximity to them, as to live with them in their lands, rather distance your self from them and make Hijrah from their lands, and this is what has been narrated by Abu Dawood they do not see each others camp fire In the story of when Jareer embraced Al-Islaam, when he said: Oh messenger of Allah, make a contract for me and make conditions so that I may pledge (to you). so he said - may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family- That you worship Allah and do not commit Shirk (by associating partners) with him, establish the prayer, pay the Zakaat and seperate yourself from the Mushrikeen, and on the authority of Abdullah Bin Amr that he said: whoever builds (a house) in the land of the Mushrikeen, and celebrates their traditional celebrations and their festivals, and imitates them until he dies, then he will be gathered with them on the day of judgement The speech of the scholars regarding the prohibition of residing amongst the Mushrikeen, the forbidance of mixing with them and the obligation of being different to them is numerous and well known, specifically from the Imaams of this Islamic Dawah, the likes of Shaykh Mohammed Bin Abdul-Wahaab, his children and his childrens children, and those who followed them from the people of knowledge and religion. For within their books is that which suffices and is satisfactory for...: لِمَن كَانَ لَهُ قَلْبٌ أَوْ أَلْقَى السَّمْعَ وَهُوَ شَهِيدٌ for him who has a heart or gives ear while he is heedful Qaaf 37 ...and from that is what Shaykh Abdul-Lateef (Ibn Abdur-Rahmaan) said in some of his works: For verily residence in a land which Shirk and Kufr (disbelief) is elevated within, and the religion of the europeans is openly displayed, or the religion of the Raafidhah and other than them from those who negate Ruboobiyyah and Uloohiyyah, and they raise high their practices, and they lower Al-Islaam and Tawheed, and they impede the saying of SubhanAllah and Alhamdulillah and Allahu Akbar, and abandon the principles of Al-Eemaan, and they rule between them with the law of the europeans and the greeks, and they slander those that came befo re from the people of Badr, and the pledge of Ridwaan For then residing amidst them - and this situation- does not occur from a heart that has undertaken the actuality of Al-Islaam, Al-Eemaan and the religion, and knows what is obligatory from the right of Allah in Al-Islaam upon the Muslimeen. Rather it does not occur from a heart who is pleased with Allah as a lord, and with Al-Islaam as a religion, and with Mohammed as a prophet - may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family. For being pleased with these three fundermental principles brings together the molars of the religion, and around it revolves the realities of knowledge and certainty, and that comprises of the love of Allah and the trace of his pleasure, concern for His religion and union with His protectors and helpers, and that obligates every disassociation and distancing from the one who is upon this way (i.e. of residing amidst them), from the one who this is his religion, rather that very same unrestricted Eemaan in the book and the Sunnah does not mix with these detested things - end of his statement, may Allah have mercy upon him As for the question: about the ruling of he who resides in the lands of the Mushrikeen, from those who attribute themselves to Al-Islaam, then this group of people are taking part in that which Allah and his messenger prohibited, except he who has been excused in the Quraan in His statement: إِلاَّ الْمُسْتَضْعَفِينَ Except the weak ones An-Nisaa 98 ...and even then they differ in class and level according to their situation, and according to what occurs from them from aiding the Mushrikeen and relying upon them, for that could be classed as Kufr (disbelief), and it could be classed less than that, The Most High said: وَلِكُلٍّ دَرَجَاتٌ مِّمَّا عَمِلُواْ وَمَا رَبُّكَ بِغَافِلٍ عَمَّا يَعْمَلُونَ For all there will be degrees (or ranks) according to what they did. And your Lord is not unaware of what they do Al-AnAam 132 As for that you (i.e. the questioner) mentioned from the people turning away from what Shaykh Mohammed Bin Abdul-Wahaab was upon in these affairs, then the issue is above what you had described it to be, that it is not dissaproved or found strange in this time (i.e. residing in the lands of disbelief), (this time) in which knowledge has become little, and ignorance has become widespread, and (the various) Fitnah has become close to eachother, and acting upon the book and the Sunnah has become little, and the strangeness of this religion has become intense, so that which the truthfull and trustworthy one mentioned has come about (i.e. Islaam has returned to something strange, as comes in the Hadeeth), and many people have come to not know anything from the religion of Al-Islaam, except that which they are accustomed to, and to Allah we belong, and to Him we shall return This is a time of patience from you Like clenching your fist upon hot coal, then you are safe from the harm And if the eye was to get involved its clouds would trickle continuous rain and heavy downpour of tears However due to the hardness of the heart (the eyes) are in drought So Oh you waste of a life, you walk around aimlessly and at random
