Hike the Black Mountains with High Peaks Sat, Oct. 5 If you’ve - TopicsExpress

Hike the Black Mountains with High Peaks Sat, Oct. 5 If you’ve been wanting to hike the highest trail in the Eastern U.S., now’s your chance. High Peaks Trail Association will lead a hike along the crest of the Black Mountains from Mt. Mitchell to Deep Gap and down to the Cattail Community on Oct. 5, followed by a happy hour with refreshments at the home of Worth and Susan Weller. The hike, rated difficult because of steep downhill sections over rugged footing, will total about 7 miles, with an overall descent of about 3,000 feet. Hikers should gather at the Burnsville Town Square at 8:30 a.m. The club will provide transportation to Mt. Mitchell in a Yancey County van for a fee of $5 per person. Hikers are asked to RSVP the hike leader to reserve their seat in the van. Leashed dogs are welcome on the hike but are not allowed in county vans, so you’ll need to arrange your own transportation if you bring your dog. Bring a lunch for the trail, along with rain gear and plenty of water. After completing the one-way hike to Cattail, we’ll enjoy refreshments at the Weller’s. Feel free to bring a dish or drinks if you wish; a club volunteer will collect them before we leave Burnsville and take them to the Weller’s. The happy hour will feature fellowship and grilled brats. Following the social, hikers will be driven back to the Town Square in a county van, arriving around 6 p.m. For more information or to RSVP and reserve your seat in the van, contact hike leader Dennis Smith at 675-9459 or dennissmith4141@gmail.
