Hike the Elk River Trail Saturday October 18, 2014. The Elk River Hiking Trail in Southeast Kansas offers panoramic views from the tops of limestone bluffs. The trail crosses small streams and ravines and winds through narrow canyons and under rock overhangs. This popular trail is designated as a National Recreation Trail and is considered to be the best hike in Kansas. It is close to the Oklahoma/Kansas border. We will hike approximately 6 to 8 miles of the trail. Plan for this trip to take 8 to 10 hours. Be prepared with appropriate clothing, lunch, snacks and water. We will stop for lunch on the trail. Meet at Backwoods at 9:00 am. Backwoods is at 51st and Sheridan in the Farm Shopping center, 6508 East 51st Street. We can carpool and caravan to the trailhead. You can do a search for more information about this trail if you want to learn more. We rarely arrange a hike in Kansas. I hope you will be able to join us. Glen Brewington is the trip organizer. General directions and notes: From Tulsa take Highway 75 to and past Bartlesville and on past the Kansas border, and past Caney Kansas. A few miles north of Caney Highway 75 merges with highway 160 East. At the southeast corner of this intersection is a John Deere farm and implement dealer. It is the O Malley Equipment Company. We will regroup there to travel together to the Western trailhead which can be difficult to find. It is difficult to know the exact time we will arrive there but it could be about 10:45 am plus or minus. This hike will start at the Western trailhead which is a different beginning point than our hike several months ago. It takes about 2 hours to drive from Tulsa. The trail can be reasonably easy but sections of it can be moderate to strenuous. Bring lunch, snacks and plenty of water. Wear weather appropriate clothing and have rain protection available if needed.
