Hip-hop is my favorite kind of music. Because of this, I really wanted to weigh in a little bit here on Iggy, T.I., and The Abstracts words on hip-hop and racial appropriation of the genre by whites, as well as the reactions Ive been seeing on social media. I dont really want to add any of my own original thoughts in this status, but to draw attention to some statements made in rap music itself by Watsky, Macklemore, and Catch Wreck that I agree with. youtube/watch?v=INNCxVpGpyU youtube/watch?v=cB_6fDcX5Es Watsky and Mack talk about what being a white rapper is like and their opinions about how they fit into hip-hop culture and what their responsibilities are, and Catch Wreck offers a response that he frames as being representative of the opinion of his community of black rappers. I love both of these songs, and think they provide a terrific blueprint for understanding how race connects to hip-hop. I in no way think that posting these links closes the case and I look forward to learning as much as possible about all sides of this conversation to be able to advance my own understanding as much as possible. I look forward to any forms of discussion about this issue people would like to make!
