Hip-hop legend Talib Kweli has called on local artists AKA and Cassper Nyovest to put aside their “beef” and “unite for hip-hop in South Africa”. AKA, whose real name is Kiernan Jordan Forbes, reportedly assaulted his rival’s manager at a nightclub in August. On the same night, Nyovest, whose real name is Refiloe Phoolo, had a gun pointed at him – allegedly by one of AKA’s friends. Fresh from recording a verse on Nyovest’s hit Doc Shebeleza, Brooklyn wordsmith Talib Kweli took a few minutes out of his set at Nasrec’s Expo Centre on Friday night to address the issue. It was his 39th birthday and he wowed the crowd with an hour-long set. “I was with my man Cassper yesterday in Soweto and today I’m with my man AKA. I saw him perform here earlier. I understand AKA and Cassper have a problem, I have nothing to do with that, but put that beef to the side and unite for hip-hop in South Africa,” Kweli said. His plea drew a huge cheer from the crowd at the Joburg venue.
