Hiring someone you can’t fire There are many businesses in this country where the husband and wife work together with just a handful of other staff to make up the rest of the team. So what happens when there is conflict in the workplace, for example, if one partner micromanages the rest of the team because the other partner won’t manage effectively, driving everyone nuts? The answer is that everyone walks on eggshells, creating an environment where morale is low and it’s just not a nice place to work. Everyone including the business suffers. Dealing with a life partner that simply doesn’t agree with your way of doing things is hard because who is right, you or them? You both see things from your own point of view, which is not necessarily the right one, and you can’t move forward. Your relationship after hours may start to suffer, creating a downward spiral for both yourselves personally and your business. Here are 7 ideas to help you work through the situation: 1. Have written down clearly defined job roles for you both 2. Restructure the business so you can report to someone else 3. Agree to leave business talk at the door before going home 4. Encourage others to treat you both like any other team member 5. Get a mediator in to work through your frustrations with you 6. Consider new roles within the company, you may be in the wrong job 7. Contact a business support service for external advice If mediation or outside help fails, one of you may have to leave the company for the sake of your relationship as well as the success of the business.
