His Excellency, President Donald Ramotar has underscored the importance of the Guyana/Suriname trade mission, as a means of promoting economic development between the two countries. The Head of State was at the time attending the welcoming ceremony for the Surinamese delegation attending the first Guyana/Suriname trade conference at the Princess International Hotel on Thursday evening. The president said some have often expressed disappointment with the pace of integration, noting that it is not just the job of governments, but rather it will be achieved when real links are forged.” This is particularly important for our two countries because we are neighbours and the development of our countries is important to give a higher quality to our people,” the Guyanese leader noted. The president expressed hope that similar initiatives as the trade mission could occur across the region. He underscored the fact that both countries have vast lands and natural resources, and have achieved a measure of food security, could be used to their advantage. He also suggested that some of the trade regimes be unified, pointing specifically to the reduction in smuggling and maximizing the benefits for the people of Guyana and Suriname. This, he said could be done for non-renewable resources such as gold.
