His troops called him Papa: Generaloberst Hermann Hoth was born on 12 April 1885. He was popular with his troops and took care of them, which earned him his nickname. He was celebrated for his command in the Battles of Vyazma and Bryansk, where his Third Panzer Group took hundreds of thousands of Soviet prisoners. It was Hoth who almost succeeded in breaking through to the encircled German Sixth Army at Stalingrad, coming within thirty kilometers of their lines (Sixth Armys outposts could even see his troops signal flares) despite severe weather and constant enemy attacks. Later, during Unternehmen Zitadelle, he was in command of the largest German panzer force ever assembled, and the tank battle at Prokhorovka was by no means decided when Hitler intervened and stopped the offensive altogether.
