Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to celebrate our roots and the many contributions of Hispanic Americans with pride. Today, the Latino community is present in all parts of society and we owe that to the pioneers who paved the way for us. In the 23rd District of Texas we have much to be thankful for in pioneers such as County officials like Alicia Chacon, Hortencia Ramos, Paul Valenzuela and Mario Rivera. Pioneers like Abelardo Baeza in college education. In medicine, we must remember pioneers like Dr. Alfredo Gutierrez, Dr. Roberto Cuellar and Dr. Fermin Calderon. Or pioneers like Gregorio Acosta or Luis Jimenez in the arts. Maria Sada and Pete Terrazas showed that business is a field where Hispanics can succeed too. Dora Alcala, Paul Moreno and Congressmen Herny Gonzalez, Herny Bonilla and Frank Tejeda showed that Hispanics can be political leaders in our country. Hispanics of the 23rd District of Texas have even reached outer space with pioneer Danny Olivas. I want to especially thank the tens of thousands of Latinos that serve in our Military – and to the veterans in our communities. These examples of courage and love for our homeland by Hispanics from the 23rd District of Texas are not few. Cleto Rodriguez and Rudolph Davila during the Second World War, Joseph Rodriguez, Ambrosio Guillen and Benito Martinez during the Korean War are a few of the heroes whose courage has been recognized with the Congressional Medal of Honor. Present and future Hispanics have a great opportunity to continue widening the paths worn by these pioneers and by so doing help make a more diverse and culturally rich United States; overall, we can help keep our country continue to be a great nation. Happy Latino Heritage Month!
