Historians, former sailors and relatives of men lost in the Royal - TopicsExpress

Historians, former sailors and relatives of men lost in the Royal Navy’s first defeat in more than a century will gather in Hampshire this autumn on the battle’s 100th anniversary. Despite facing newer, faster and more powerful German force, Rear Admiral Christopher ‘Kit’ Cradock (Image courtesy of the US library of congress) offered battle off the Coronel in Chile. In the ensuing battle Cradock was killed when his flagship HMS Good Hope blew up after taking at least three dozen direct hits, while cruiser HMS Monmouth (pictured) fought to the last man, going under with her Colours still flying. Various monuments were erected to the men lost at Coronel and their commander, including a memorial cross to Cradock in the grounds of All Saints Church in Catherington, near Waterlooville, where a centennial service will be held at 10.30am on November 1.
