Historic tidbits about Ethiopia on this date on December 29 --- --- On this date on December 29, 1958, the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa inaugurated its first official meeting in Addis Ababa. According to The Organization of African Unity by A.F. Addona,fourteen African delegates attended, representi...ng... eight independent states and six colonies. The meeting was open by Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie. The convention concluded on January 6, 1959. In 1961, the new headquarters of the ECA opened at Africa Hall in Addis Ababa. --- On this date on December 29, 1958, Addis Ababa based English publication the Ethiopian Herald switched from a 25cent-weekly to a 10-cent daily publication. The Ethiopian Herald began publication on July 3, 1943, according to Encyclopedia Aethiopica , which notes its editor during the time of the switch over was African American David A. Talbot. --- On this date on December 29, 1958 1950, Ethiopian Air Lines added two, 36 seat, American-made Convair 240 aircrafts to its fleet. According to the Encyclopedia of African Airlines, the Addis Ababa runway however was not long enough for the planes to land safely.
