Historical Highlight: This month we are highlighting American architect Charles Howard Crane (Aug 13, 1885). Born in Hartford, Connecticut, he specialized in the design of movie palaces in North America and is regarded as one of the worlds most prolific theatre architects. His career included some 250 theaters, with a large number of them in the Detroit area. His 5,174-seat Detroit Fox Theatre was the largest of the Fox Theatres. Crane was a genius at giving his venues great acoustics. He also designed office buildings, many of which are attached to the movie palaces that he designed. With the onset of the Great Depression at the beginning of the 1930s, Crane left Detroit and moved to London. He died in 1952.
