Historical Post: (Old State Capitol Historical Photo Re-post) The Old State Capitol is an attraction to Baton Rouge and its origin dates back to 1847. This old statehouse served as the seat of Louisiana government until 1862 when Union troops captured Baton Rouge. Fleeing Union troops, Louisiana legislators abandoned the building in which they had voted to secede from the Union in 1861. The building was used as a Union prison and garrison until December 28, 1862 when the interior of the building was destroyed due to an accidental fire started by Union soldiers. There are a few old photos that go back far in time that depicts what the old capitol looked like many, many years ago. I think out of the old ones we have from library sources this is my favorite of them all. I could ask a hundred questions about this one. I would like to know what the buildings on the opposite side of North Boulevard were? Were they residences, businesses, etc.? Who lived in these homes near the old capitol? What are the people doing close by the rivers edge in front of the old building? And, many more. I love everything about this old photo. You can see the turrents on the top of building that were removed to lighten the structure. I love learning about early Baton Rouge and what our ancestors experienced before we arrived on the scene. I hope you enjoy this photo as much as I do.
