Historical facts about the Denver District Attorneys office: On March 29, 1889, Robert Leroy Parker, better known as Butch Cassidy, who stood lookout at the First National Bank of Denver on Seventeenth and Larimer Streets, while his partner, Thomas C. McCarty, an associate of bank robber Cole Younger, enter the bank with what he represented to bank president, David H. Moffat, as a bottle of explosive nitroglycerine. McCarty demanded money and made off with $21,000. The “nitroglycerine” bottle was discovered discarded on Larimer Street and contained a harmless oil. McCarty and Cassidy escaped and were never caught and Denver District Attorney Isaac N. Stevens (1889-1891) never charged anyone with the crime.
